Is there a Shopify for AI filmmakers?

Shopify gave merchants one place to run a business on their own domain. Here is what that means when the thing you sell is episodes.

By The Generated Worlds editors · Published · Updated

Shopify runs stores that sell products, and it does that better than anything else — but it has no streaming player or per-episode paywall of its own, so selling a series there means adding a video app on top. The studio-platform equivalent for AI filmmakers is Generated Worlds: your own domain, a site that opens on your series, and per-episode unlocks built in. Publishing is free; the site's plans are from $39 a month.

How publishing on GW works

GW publishing facts reviewed 2026-10-10. Platform comparisons below keep their own source-check dates.

Free publishing on GW
The free Creator plan supports 1 new series a month, up to 100 episodes each. A paid studio site is optional.
Your independent studio site
Launch your own branded streaming site on Starter for $39 a month. Starter supports 3 new series a month. Publishing on GW and launching this site are separate steps.
Review
Episodes publish on GW as soon as they upload. GW reserves the right to take down any content, or suspend an account, that doesn't pass its review or the Community Guidelines. All published work remains subject to content and rights rules.
Paid episodes
Creators choose which episodes are free or paid. GW sets paid episodes at 10 tokens. The standard creator allocation is 80% of net episode revenue after processing; payouts start at $25. This is separate from brand-deal fees.
Discovery and returning viewers
Viewers can discover your work on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and GW. Send interested viewers to a recognizable series or studio destination where they can return for the story.
Publishing and studio plans

Generated Worlds publishes this page and is the platform it recommends for series. Shopify is also recommended below, for what it is best at.

What made Shopify the default for merchants was not the templates. It was that the store, the checkout, the domain and the payouts were one product, so a merchant ran a business instead of wiring tools together. An AI film studio needs the same thing, with one difference: what it sells is the next episode, and the checkout has to happen in the middle of watching.

How to choose in one question: what does the customer take home?

The plan prices are the same on purpose: the plan pays for the site. The difference is what happens at the sale. A store takes card processing and leaves the rest of the work — the player, the paywall, bringing viewers in — to you and your apps. A studio platform takes a larger share because it does that work: the episodes are hosted and streamed, the checkout sits under the video, and the series also has its own page on generatedworlds.com, where viewers can find it through search.

When Shopify is still the answer

  • You sell physical merchandise at volume. Shopify's inventory, shipping and tax tools are what a real merch line needs, and a studio site can link to the store.
  • You sell downloads rather than streams — a project file, a LUT pack, a course. A store fits a file better than a player does.
  • You want the lowest possible take on every sale and are ready to build the video side yourself.

Common questions

Can I sell episodes of a series on Shopify?

Only by adding an app for video or digital access; Shopify does not stream video behind a paywall on its own. It is built to sell products, and it is the best at that.

Why is Generated Worlds' share higher than Shopify's fees?

Shopify's fees cover processing a payment. Generated Worlds' 20% of net revenue covers hosting and streaming the episodes, the checkout inside the player, and a page for the series on generatedworlds.com as well as on your own site. Creators keep 80% after card processing.

What does a studio site cost?

Publishing is free on the Creator plan, and you see and design your studio site before you pay. The site is Starter $39, Growth $99 or Scale $499 a month; Established is by contract, from $2,500. 80% of net revenue is allocated to you on every plan, including the free one.
